Required parts

List of parts needed to change the manual air conditioning to Climatronic in the Polo 6R.

First, you need a Climatronic heater. There are several versions of heater – the choice is up to you. In addition to the heater, you will also need the parts that are listed below.

Connector T16i – 4A0972883C (4A0 972 883 C)

4A0972883C / 443972805 / 443972807

Connector to ventilator near fan controller, T6 – 6X0972623 (6X0 972 623)

  • Ventilator T6/1 – T16/15
  • Ventilator T6/2 – +75 SB40 → take wire from old T5 connector, red and white.
  • Ventilator T6/3 – T16/16
  • Ventilator T6/4 – GND → take appropriate thickness
  • Ventilator T6/6 – T16/14

Connector to fan controller: old T5 (Manual heater) → new T6 (Climatronic heater):

It should be together with the harness from the heater. I recommend buying a Climatronic heater complete with a harness!

G107 – Sunlight penetration photosensor – 6R0907539 (6R0 907 539)

Connector T2 (aka T4) for sunlight sensor – 1K0972704C (1K0 972 704 C)

It has 4 holes, but we use only 2 pins.

G191 Centre vent temperature sender – 6Q0820539 (6Q0 820 539) PR-9AK

Cables

You need also some car installation cables in few thickness. I bought a few wires in different thicknesses and colors on the Allegro, because I don’t need them very much. I ordered 10-30 meters of different wires.
I also bought a few butt connectors because I don’t like to solder thick wires 😛

J293*

In most Polos radiator fan is controlled by the J293, coolant relay. The J279 relay operates the fan when temperatures run high or A/C is on.

This control module switches on and off the A/C clutch and therefore the A/C compressor. It switches the coolant fan and calculates the pressure in the refrigerant circuit on vehicles with a High Pressure Sensor -G65- or A/C Pressure/Temperature Sensor -G395-.

There are different construction styles of J293. It mainly depends on the engine and the ECU that controls it.

In some Polos (like 1.2 TDI Bluemotion) fan is controlled by PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) from the ECU (Engine Control Unit/Module) – nicer option.

  1. J279 coolant relay – it’s located on the left lower cross member, below/in front of the battery.
  2. J279 inside the fan, then it’s operated by PWM,

You can have a look at the radiator, if you have the thermostat, you have the relay, otherwise, J293 is in the heart of the ventilator.
You should be able to see the thermostat on the top. it’s next to the driver side headlight.

In my Polo 6R I have 5J0919506. According to Elsa, 2012 1.4 MPI engine should have the relay located there (not in the center of the fan):

T4ab is in the earlier versions, not in my 6R.

1 – Radiator fan control unit -J293-

2 – Radiator fan thermal switch -F18- (T3af)

3 – 3-pin connector -T3ae-

4 – 10-pin connector -T10z-

If you have J293 inside the cooling fan, that’s great – everything is operated by CAN and the engine.

If you have J293 separate from the cooling fan, it’s below the battery on the inside (engine side) of the left longitudinal beam – then there are two wires from the Manual AC/Climatronic to the J293.

If you have manual AC from factory (like me) there are brown/green and brown/blue wires behind the AC panel. In other case you should to run two wires from J293.

You can just have a look at your current connector for manual AC if the wires are there:

here is my brown/ blue wire : -)
so I don’t need to put extra long wires 🙂

PS. don’t throw away that connector, you can use it for OEM heated seats.

there are brown/blue and brown/green wires from old T16/h to J293

don’t forget to add the postive wire and GND to t6ag:

T10/1 – red-whiteplusT6ag/2
T10/4 – brownminusT6ag/4

On some Polo 6R you can find a different J293, eg.:
