Air Baffle in VW Polo 6R/6C Bumper

CNK -
Air Baffle in VW Polo 6R/6C Bumper

The air baffle mounted in the front bumper is a component installed below the main air channel. Its purpose is to direct more air towards the intake system.

This component appears under various names on the internet – Germans refer to it as Luftleitblech (air deflector), russians use воздуховод бампера (bumper air duct).

This solution is factory-installed in many cars, including the Polo 6R, which I’ve described in more detail at the end of this post.

In the case of Polo 6R/6C, an additional air baffle can be installed in any engine version, as it is mounted in the front part of the bumper under the upper grille (so it doesn’t matter what air filter or front panel we have).

In this article, I will present the air baffles available on the market and discuss their impact on the intake system operation.

Accessory Deflectors (Bumper Air Ducts)

Apart from HG Motorsport/HF-Series products, at the time of writing this article, I haven’t found other alternatives available for sale. However, in my opinion, its construction is so simple that anyone with basic manual skills can make it themselves 😉

Accessory deflectors are mounted using screws or simply by “press-fitting.”

Even if the deflector doesn’t significantly improve performance, it can look quite interesting with a contrasting color, enhancing the visual appearance.

HF-Series Air Baffle

Additional air baffle enabling maximum fresh air flow to the air intake – directs the air stream directly to the air channel.

Material: 2mm thick aluminum (powder coated in black or red).

Article number: HGLLBP6C (black), HGLLBP6C-r (red)

Price: €51.63 (€40.31 + €11.32 shipping)

Philipp Dröge’s Air Baffle

Deflector made by Philipp, available on kleinanzeigen.de (German equivalent of olx). Shorter than the HG Motorsport one, effectiveness probably minimal as well, but visually it looks quite good in bright white color with an additional WRC sticker.

Price: €30 + shipping

Jonathan Thomas’s Air Baffle

Similar to the HG Motorsport deflector, with an additional side wall. The deflector is made of plastic using 3D printing, designed from scratch by Jonathan Thomas from the Polo 6R/6C GTI Owners Club. Available for sale only in the UK.

Interesting Facts

Information about factory air baffle in Polo 6R/6C

In the case of Polo 6R/6C, these types of baffles were mainly in the front panel only with certain engine versions (mainly lower-powered ones, which have more shielded radiators). They were always together with the front reinforcement.

Here are examples I managed to find in pictures from allegro/otomoto (1.2 petrol, 1.2 TDI, 1.6 TDI):

And below for comparison, the baffle in the front panel from Polo 6C GTI 1.8 TSI:

You can notice here that with a larger water radiator, the front panel “frame” is much narrower.

Air Duct from Polo VI 6N5 Sedan

In Polo, the factory air baffle in the front panel as a separate part was only present in newer Polo models manufactured for the Russian market in sedan version, so there isn’t much information about it on the internet.

Polo VI 6N5 in sedan has a factory baffle in the panel – but only in naturally aspirated models with PR-TL1 (according to the PR-Codes decoder, this means: 4-cylinder SI engine 1.4 l unit 04E.A).

It probably won’t fit the Polo 6R without modification, but if someone wants to try – you can experiment with it, as it’s relatively inexpensive.

The Russian sedan baffle has part number: 6N5121330, here are some pictures:
