Tandem brake master cylinder 23.81 – newer version

Tandem brake master cylinder 23.81 – newer version

Compatibility issues

I couldn’t order the appropriate brake servo for my master cylinder because its part numbers had been replaced with newer ones, and it wasn’t possible to order a servo from earlier production. As a result, I had to change the brake master cylinder once again to ensure everything fit together properly.

In a previous post about the servo, I already wrote about availability and fitting problems, but this is quite important, so I will describe it in this post as well.

Generations of tandem brake master cylinders with 23.81 mm piston in Polo 6R

Brake master cylinders with a 23.81 mm piston diameter were only available in the sporty Polo 6R R WRC Street 2.0 TSI version, and in the facelifted Polo 6C only in the GTI 1.8 TSI version. Upgrading to a more powerful master cylinder is a fundamental improvement when enhancing the braking system and is also recommended when changing to larger brake calipers.

Version 1

  • Part number: 6R1611019B
  • Production period: until 03.11.2013
  • Application: factory-fitted only in VW Polo 6R R WRC Street (2.0 TSI)
  • Compatibility: fits without problems in other Polo 6R models (with older type servo with smaller opening diameter)
  • Availability: can still be ordered

Version 2

  • Part number: 6R1611019E
  • Production period: 03.11.2013 – 01.09.2019

Version 3

  • Part number: 6R1611019G
  • Production period: from 01.09.2019
  • Required servo: 6C1614106F (from Polo 6C 1.8 TSI)

I wanted everything with OE parts, so instead of looking for an older type (from 6R) servo replacement, I decided to use newer parts. Braking is quite important, so as I’ve mentioned before – in my opinion, when it comes to our safety and the safety of others – it’s not worth saving money on this.

Design differences

The older type FTE servos (from Polo 6R) have a smaller diameter opening:

Problems with improper fitting:

  • using a newer type servo with an old brake master cylinder results in too much play
  • when using a newer type master cylinder with an old servo, it won’t fit at all

Summary

The braking system is one of the most important safety systems in a car. Volkswagen has introduced several changes in the design of brake master cylinders and servos in Polo 6R models, which can cause problems during repairs. The most important thing is to maintain the generational consistency of the components used and to use original OE parts, which guarantee the highest level of safety.
