Info about BCM PQ25 (J519) in VW Polo 6R

The BCM (Body Control Module), formally known as the Central Electronics Control Module (diagnostic address J519), is the brain of the electrical system in the VW Polo 6R (PQ25) and its siblings, the Seat Ibiza 6J and Skoda Fabia.
Among enthusiasts and in older VAG nomenclature, this unit is often still erroneously referred to as the Bordnetz.

What is the BCM J519?

In the VW Polo 6R, the J519 unit has been significantly extended compared to older platforms. The BCM has taken over the functions of the old Bordnetz control unit (J519) and the convenience module (J393), while also integrating the Gateway interface (J533).

On the left: the old setup with a separate onboard supply unit (J519) and convenience module (J393). On the right: the new integrated BCM (J519) used in the VW Polo 6R.

In most 6R models, the Gateway is “virtual” and integrated into the BCM. A notable exception is the early 1.2 TDI Bluemotion (with start-stop), which utilizes an external Gateway module located behind the glove box.

Technical highlights of the PQ25 BCM include:

  • Connectors: The unit is connected via two 73-pin connectors (T73a and T73b).
  • Light Actuation: Turn signals, brake lights, and hazard lights are actuated via integrated semiconductor switches. However, main beams and side lights are still conventionally controlled via the light switch (E1).
  • Integrated Aerial: The radio remote control aerial is no longer a separate wire; it is printed directly onto the BCM’s circuit board (PCB), offering a range of 30–50 meters.

Upgrading this unit is mandatory for many retrofits, such as cruise control (CCS), bi-xenon or full LED headlights, or front fog lights with cornering function. According to Ross-Tech, you can identify your BCM’s capabilities by the middle three digits of its part number (e.g., ***-937-087-***).

Below is a quick comparison table followed by a detailed breakdown of each version.

BCM TypePart Number (Mid)Cruise Control (CCS)Key Features
Basis+084❌ Nobasic functions only
Medium+085❌ Nocentral locking, seat heating
Medium++086❌ Noremote control support
High+087YesCCS, anti-theft alarm
Reku088Yesstart/stop (recuperation)
Licht089Yeslighting (LED DRL / bi-xenon)
BCM Max090Yesfull (lighting + start/stop)
