Milwaukee L4 NL400 – A neck light built for garage work

While looking for good spot lighting for working on my car, I came across the Milwaukee L4 NL400. It’s not a replacement for main garage lighting or a typical headlamp – it’s rather an additional light source that shines exactly where I’m looking. After several months of use, I must admit it’s one of those purchases I don’t regret.

What makes this light special?

The first thing that catches your eye is its unusual design. Unlike most similar lights currently available on the market, the battery is located at the back, not near the LED diodes. This makes a huge difference because it makes the light well-balanced and reasonably comfortable even during extended use.

How does it perform in practice?

If you’ve ever tried tinkering with your car wearing a headlamp, you know what I’m talking about – constantly hitting the wheel well, clutch pedals, or dashboard can be annoying. This light solves that problem. Thanks to its design, you can easily fit your head in hard-to-reach places. I mainly use it when working on the suspension and around the BCM wiring area – anywhere a traditional headlamp would be inconvenient. Sometimes I just hang it or place it on something and use the adjustment options, thanks to the bendable head illuminating what I need.

Technical Specifications

  • Power: 400 lumens (completely sufficient, has two lighting modes)
  • Battery: REDLITHIUM™ USB 3.0 Ah (USB charging)
  • Operating time: up to 5 hours at full power

It’s worth mentioning the charging system – the light has a standard USB-C port through which the battery located at the back is charged. This is a much better solution compared to some competitive models, like Caterpillar from CAT, where you need to use two separate cables to charge both parts of the light.

What else can you use it for?

I initially bought it mainly for working on my car, but it quickly turned out to be useful for other projects in the garage and garden. It’s invaluable for any tasks where you need both hands – handy even for cleaning the lawn mower at night or cleaning up after a barbecue.

It excels at evening garden work and even serves as emergency lighting during home repairs. Basically anywhere a traditional flashlight or headlamp would be inconvenient.

Is it worth it?

In my opinion, definitely yes. It might not be the cheapest light on the market, but its design and build quality really hold up. If you spend a lot of time in the garage working on your car, this light will make your work significantly easier.

The only thing I could nitpick about is the color. Red is Milwaukee’s company color, but personally, I prefer blue tools in my garage. However, this is purely an aesthetic issue that doesn’t affect functionality. Maybe when it gets less red from age and dirt over time 😉
