I recently added a new tool to my garage equipment – the BGS 9203, which is an alternative to the original VAG T40148 tool. The purchase was driven by the need to quickly and safely remove the cigarette lighter socket without disassembling half of the cockpit.
VAG (Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche) vehicle owners often face the challenge of replacing or repairing the cigarette lighter socket. Typically, such an operation requires time-consuming removal of the center tunnel or armrest. This is where the specialized service tool T40148 (also known by catalog number V03839111AK) comes in handy, allowing for quick and safe operation.
The T40148 tool was specifically designed for safe removal of illuminated cigarette lighter sockets. Its construction enables precise release of the socket’s retaining clips without risking damage to plastic components or wiring.

Important technical notes:
- Tool T40148 works ONLY with illuminated cigarette lighter sockets
- Attempting to use it on non-illuminated sockets may result in damage to the mounting sleeve
- During removal, special attention must be paid to the length of connecting wires
- After removal, it is recommended to gently squeeze the retaining springs in the socket to ensure proper cigarette lighter operation
The original T40148 tool is mainly available to authorized VAG service centers, with an official price of around 70 EUR. On auction sites, if available at all, it costs even more. There are alternatives available on the market – in my case, I chose the BGS 9203, which costs about half the price of the original.
