Volkswagen Polo WRC 820 HP from AMK Development

Volkswagen Polo WRC 820 HP from AMK Development

Introduction

The Volkswagen Polo 6R R WRC Street is already an impressive hot hatch on its own, but the French workshop AMK Development, led by Karim, decided to push the boundaries of this model even further. The result? A Polo WRC with 820 horsepower and weighing only 1100 kg, making it one of the most advanced Polo modification projects.

About the project

French YouTuber G3_Adrien presented this unique project in his video, which quickly attracted the attention of car modification fans. The car comes from the limited series Polo WRC Street (not to be confused with the actual rally Polo from WRC) but underwent extensive mechanical modifications.

The base is a 2.0-liter TSI engine (CDL EA113), which has been completely rebuilt – forged internals, a larger Garrett G-Series G25-660 turbocharger, a water-methanol injection system (WMI), and a dual fuel injection system (direct and indirect injection) were used.

It’s worth noting that France is famous for advanced Polo WRC Street tuning projects – many heavily modified versions of this model are created in that country.

Technical specifications

  • Engine: Forged 2.0 TFSI EA113 CDL
  • Maximum power: 820 HP
  • Torque: 855 Nm
  • Curb weight: approximately 1100 k
  • Power-to-weight ratio: 0.75 HP/kg
  • Turbocharger: Garrett G-Series G25-660
  • Fuel: E85 + water-methanol injection (WMI)
  • Injection system: dual (direct + indirect)
  • Drive: front-wheel drive
  • Wheels: OZ Racing Ultraleggera 17″ 7.5J
  • Transmission: factory with reinforcements
  • Tires: TOYO semi-slicks in size 235 (Yokohama at the rear)

Intake system and control elements

One of the key elements of the modification is a completely rebuilt intake system. AMK Development used:

  • Custom aluminum intake pipe ending with an ITG Maxogen cone filter
  • Aftermarket intake manifold from RPC Motorsport, replacing the original plastic manifold with swirl flaps
  • Aftermarket aluminum valve cover
  • OKD (OKADA PROJECTS) ignition coils with increased efficiency

Under the light switch, they installed a PLEX PBC PRO panel – an advanced electronic boost controller that allows control over boost pressure in different power modes. The device has an OBD CAN BUS parameter reading function, which allows real-time monitoring of key engine parameters.

In the trunk, there’s an AEM tank for methanol for the water-methanol injection system (WMI), which is activated only in higher power modes (above 700 HP). This system not only lowers the temperature in the intake manifold but also raises the effective octane rating of the fuel, allowing for more aggressive ignition timing without the risk of detonation.

Chassis modifications

To tame the enormous power, AMK Development carried out a series of chassis modifications:

  • Limited-slip differential (LSD)
  • Sports suspension
  • Stiffer anti-roll bar
  • Lightweight, wide 17″ 7.5J wheels from OZ Racing
  • Reinforcements for the subframe and body
  • BRIDE sports bucket seats
  • Removed rear bench seat to reduce weight

As Karim emphasizes, a major challenge was fitting all the components into the small engine bay of the Polo while maintaining full functionality of the air conditioning and heating.

Performance and operating modes

The car has been equipped with four power modes:

  • 500 HP / 500 Nm
  • 600 HP
  • 700 HP
  • 820 HP / 855 Nm

Even in the basic 500 HP mode, the car impresses with its dynamics, while in the full 820 HP mode, it’s difficult to maintain traction in the first three gears. From 4th gear onward, the car begins to fully utilize the available power.

The owner is planning to install upgraded brakes and wider fenders, which are currently in progress.

Summary

This French VW Polo 6R WRC Street is an example of advanced tuning that tests the limits of a compact hot hatch, utilizing the potential of the CDL engine. Although the car is mainly optimized for acceleration and straight-line driving, it shows an impressive level of engineering and commitment to the project.
