Theory

Some theory:

Very basically, your car’s air conditioning system is made up of three major components: the compressor, the evaporator and the condenser. There are lots of hoses, tubes, valves and sensors connecting them all. As it turned out, there were many different versions of individual parts in Polo 6R/6C 🙂

1 – fresh air and heater controls (manual AC)
2 – fresh air and heater controls (semi-automatic AC)

Climatronic / Semi-manual Climatic / Manual Climatic

  • Climatronic AC = automatic AC
  • Climatic AC in cars to November 7, 2010 = semi-automatic AC
  • Climatic AC in cars from November 8, 2010 = manual AC

“All VW’s/Skoda’s/Seat’s “Climatic” from 2011 are full manual, no semi-automatic as before. I don’t know about this earlier. My brother in law ordered Polo before me (in 2010), and he has a semi-automatic air conditioning.. 🙄”

“Climatic” air conditioning since 2011 means fully manual air conditioning in Volkswagen passenger models, while “Climatronic” is automatic climate control.

“What is installed in all new Golfs now (as far as I can tell) is fully manual temperature control. The biggest problem is that VW is still calling this Climatic on their website and even on the window sticker of my car.”

if you want to upgrade to Climatronic, this is how to do it:

  • remove centre console
  • remove steering wheel and everything on the steering column
  • remove all dashboard fittings (vents, buttons, radio, switches, tacho)
  • remove dashboard
  • remove wipers, parafan, ECU, airbox etc
  • disconnect drained aircon hoses and coolant hoses 
  • remove cross carrier underneath dash  
  • remove heater housing
  • install climatronic heater housing
  • adjust wiring for climatronic
  • build in everything in opposite order
  • code engine ECU
  • fill up aircon and top up coolant
